Most vehicles today, accelerate, handle and brake as well as "sports cars" from years ago so it begs the question, "what's the point of a sports car these days?" Simple. To make some sort of bold fashion statement. As opposed to the 60's and 70's, however, there are a number of four door automobiles on the market today that are more than suitable "fashion statements". So, where do vehicles like our $43,000, 400 horsepower, 2012 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible here fit in? Good question.
As subtle as a flamethrower and more powerful too, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible does make a statement about the person who drives it, regardless of whether or not the driver owns it or not. Does the car make the person or does the person make the car? Little of both for sure. Now, on paper, we don't care what people think of us or the cars we drive since we're focused on cars themselves but in our humble opinion this car looks utterly ridiculous and makes whomever driving it the object of scorn and ridicule. As if we care but driving this on a crowded interstate with the top down does leave you feeling a tad "look at me" vulnerable. Be prepared for people to think you're something you're not, good, bad or indifferent. For certain, this car is for the strong willed and extremely confident.
We've said it before and we'll say it again that we're fans of the idea of a convertible top but not fans, per se, of the vehicle themselves. That comes from growing up with convertibles that rode like canvas covered trucks and shook worse than a cellophane wrapped case of bottled water. This car, however, suffers from none of those maladies. In fact, there was little if any shake in this two ton plus "sports car" with top up or down. Remarkable considering it's missing a major part of its structure. Again, our biggest problem with the is car, aside from a more than compliant but totally unengaging driving experience, was that we felt so damn conspicuous.
We wish it came with a flashing neon sign license plate frame saying, "I am not a douche bag, I just really like the car". Well, we didn't really like the car to be honest with you. Our Camaro of choice is a nicely equipped fixed roof Camaro RS. It's a better balanced automobile, much better on gas and more than adequately powered. And we've never felt ridiculous driving one either.
